Brian J. Feldman: Constellation/EDF venture good for Maryland

Commentary | Brian J. Feldman
As our economy struggles and we look for ways to create new jobs, our state faces a staggering budget deficit which puts existing state jobs at risk. At the same time, we continue to strive for ways to generate clean, affordable, domestic energy sources. There is a partial solution available which addresses all of these issues.

The Public Service Commission is considering a proposal between Constellation Energy and EDF Group that would provide the necessary funding to build a third nuclear power facility at Calvert Cliffs. This venture is expected to infuse an immediate $130 million into our state treasury. Moreover, building such a facility would result in thousands of high paying jobs in its construction and operation. The facility would also generate millions for the local economy, resulting in even more jobs and tax revenue.

Additionally, nuclear power produces electricity without emitting greenhouse gases. The new generation nuclear facilities are remarkably safe. The reactor proposed for Calvert Cliffs would be among the safest, most advanced designs available today putting, Maryland on track toward energy independence and a better, greener economy.

The proposed Constellation/EDF venture is good for Maryland and our regulators and lawmakers should actively support it.
