A Champion for the Disability Community

In 2016, Governor Larry Hogan signed legislation introduced by Senator Brian J. Feldman to create tax-advantaged savings accounts for Marylanders with disabilities. In response to the bi-partisan, bicameral bill that the United States Congress passed authorizing each state to establish their own ABLE program, the ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) bill establishes Maryland ABLE accounts which are similar to 529 college-savings accounts.  ABLE accounts allow individuals with disabilities and their families to open an account to cover educational expenses as well as assistance for medical and dental care, assistive technology, transportation, housing and job training, without impacting eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid and other benefits.  The ABLE program in Maryland is expected to be up and running by the end of 2017.
